James "Neal" Andrews October 19,
1973 - October 14, 2007 - MELDRIM - James
"Neal" Andrews, 33, of Meldrim, GA a
beloved and devoted father and husband, as
well as a well-known and respected Effingham
County Fire Fighter, died as the result of a
boating accident on the Ogeechee River while
fishing with his son. He was born in Savannah;
he attended Effingham County schools and
Florida Air Force Academy before graduating
from Osborne High in Smyrna, GA. He was a
graduate of New England Institute of
Technology with a degree in Architectural
Design. He worked for several years in the
construction and Architecture field in Rhode
Island before moving his family back to his
hometown in Georgia and joining the Effingham
County Fire Dept (his DREAM job). He was the
Captain of the Meldrim Fire Station and was
instrumental to the department in 2000 when he
helped consolidate all of the county's
stations under one department. He was one of
the first full time career firefighters in
Effingham County as well as a certified
training instructor. He was also the first
Effingham County firefighter to drag a person
to safety from a burning building. He lived to
serve the community, and loved to do anything
outdoors with his family and friends,
especially to fish. He is survived by his
wife, Cynthia Andrews (Ferri) of Meldrim and
formally of Bristol, Rhode Island, two
children Joshua and Megan Andrews of Meldrim,
his father James A. Andrews of Meldrim, his
Mother and stepfather Sheron and Perry D.
Finch of Hagan, GA, a brother Ryan C. Andrews
of Meldrim, several aunts, uncles, cousins,
nieces and a nephew as well as his extended
family of Firefighters all of which loved him
dearly. The family attended St. Boniface
Catholic Church in Springfield, GA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent
in Neal's memory to the National
Fallen Firefighters Association, P.O. Drawer
498, Emmitsburg, MD 21721.
Visitation: 6-8 pm Friday at Fairhaven
Funeral Home in Garden City , GA. Funeral
Services: 10:00 am Saturday at Meldrim Baptist
Church in Meldrim, GA.
