ALVIN PAUL EDENFIELD
2003 Effingham County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
Alvin Paul Edenfield was known as Springfield’s “APE” during his baseball days in the mid 1930’s.
Mr. Edenfield pitched for baseball teams in Effingham County League, the Savannah River League and the Georgia/Carolina League. He was offered an Athletic Scholarship to Brewton-Parker College in Mt. Vernon, Georgia while playing his favorite sport. He also played softball for the Springfield Baptist Church Softball league and play basketball for Effingham Academy from 1933-1934.
He was co-owner of the first lighted ball park in Effingham County, MOED Stadium, and he also helped build this 500-seat stadium. He was Superintendent of Water Works for the City of Springfield and installed water meters and sanitation lines for the City of Springfield.
Mr. Edenfield built fire trucks for the City of Springfield and Town of Rincon. He was Assistant Fire Chief for the City of Springfield and a member of the Springfield Lions Club and the Georgia National Guard Military Policy Department. He was also a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Springfield, formerly known as Springfield Baptist Church. He was married to Madena Hinely for 41 years. He passed away November 16, 1976. They have three children, 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
