B. T. Maulden
2004 Effingham County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
B.T. Maulden attended Effingham Academy in Springfield during 1938 to 1942. He was injured when run over by a car and got behind in school, so he did not graduate. He later joined the Marine Corp. He was very active in sports while in school. While in the 7th grade, Mr. Eliazer, the principal, got him to play on the high school team. While in high school, B.T. played different positions but mostly catching or pitching.
He won state in the pole vault in the 10th grade. He also ran the 440 in the state and won third. He never practiced for this but when Frances Reiser got sick and couldn’t run, B.T. filled in and ran in his place.
After returning from the marines, B.T. played for Springfield, in the Ogeechee League and in the Georgia
Carolina League. He played left field and caught for many years. He also played in the Savannah River League for the Seaboard Air Line railroad team. They won the Savannah River League championship in 1947. B. T. was the catcher and three or four members on the team had played pro ball.
B.T. married Monteen Usher and they had two girls, one boy and nine grandchildren.
B. T. was police for the city for several years. He used his own car to use for the police car as the city had no funds to provide one. He is retired from the railroad.
