Barry Pevey
2005 Effingham County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
Barry was born in Savannah and reared in Springfield.
He started his baseball career at the age of 9 by playing county little league started by Alfred Pevey. At that time there were no other organized sports programs in Effingham County. He played pony league with Springfield and was asked to play with Pooler in the Savannah league.
At the age of 14 he started catching for the Pineora Men’s Semi-Pro Baseball team which was in the Savannah League.
Barry played 4 years of baseball for Effingham County High School usually as the catcher but also pitched some. He also played football and basketball. He was captain of 3 sports his senior year.
He was offered a baseball scholarship to attend South Georgia Junior College but elected to attend Georgia Southern College where he played baseball for 4 years. In his senior year GSC played in the NAIA College World Series in Kansas City Missouri but lost in the final game. During that time, he continued playing in the Savannah River League, sometime catching a doubleheader at GSC before catching a third game that night in Savannah.
After graduating from GSC and serving as a fighter pilot in the USMC, he played for Barrett Oil in the Savannah River League for years.
He owes his love of the game of baseball to many players such as Mr. Freddy Weitman, around the Springfield Area. He will always remember as a kid watching the baseball games at Mo-Ed stadium.
Barry now resides in Delaware.
