Clifford Rogers

2004 Effingham County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

Clifford Rogers started playing baseball in the late 1950’s after moving to Guyton from Claxton, Georgia.  He played through the 1960’s while men’s baseball was a big sport.

Alots of the games were played at the Old Pineora baseball field.

After baseball phased out he began to play men’s league softball.  He had many successful years at this game. Through the years of playing he received numerous trophies for hitting the most homeruns.  He was most noted for hitting a softball out for homers and because of this he got intentionally walked a lot.  He loved the game very much and played as much as possible, up until he played in the over 50’s men’s league.

He also contributed to the beginning of the Guyton Athletic Association and helped to build and maintain the Mary Owens Ball Field.  Before paid umpires for youth sports were established he spent many hours of volunteering umpiring.  During the years of playing, he also coached the ladies softball team, having his 2 daughters and their mother on the same team.

At this time he has 4 children – Terri, Greg, Luciee, and George who were taught and coached by him to play and love the game as much as he did. Even after 3 generations, his children and grandchildren are very active in coaching or playing baseball and softball.  He would be very proud to see this game still continued in the family as it has and loving just as he did.

He passed away in February 2000.  At the mere mention of his name people still remember him for his ability to his a softball further and harder than most.
