Frederick D. Weitman Jr.

2003 Effingham County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

 

 

Born September 30, 1932, in Springfield, Georgia, and a lifelong resident of Effingham County.

He graduated from Effingham Academy in 1949, where he played baseball, basketball, and track.  The 1949 baseball team won First Place in District and State Class “C” Baseball Championships.  Frederick played first base on the winning team.

 

He attended Georgia Teachers College 1949-53 and graduated with a BS Degree in Education.  He played outfield and pitched for the “Teachers” 1950-52, and lettered each year as a “T-Club” member. 

 

During 1950’s and 1960’s, he played with Turkey Branch and Springfield in the County League, with the Effingham Crackers in the Savannah River League.  He pitched, played outfield, and first base.  He was selected to play in a number of league all-star games and elected League Secretary in 1958 and Manager of the Effingham Crackers in 1959.

 

He is active in the Bethel Lutheran Church in Springfield having served as Sunday School Superintendent, Vice-Chairman of Council, Chairman of Cemetery Committee, and current Chairman of the Property Committee.  He played with the church in the softball league and selected several years on the league All-Star Team.

 

He is married to the former Loretta Morgan and has two daughters, Rene Conner and Merry Robinson.  He also has four grandchildren, Christopher and Colby Conner; Morgan and Zachary Robinson.  He is retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture with 35  years service and the Georgia Army National Guard with 20 years service.
