George “Colonel” Morrell
2004 Effingham County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
Born October 19, 1932 in Clyo, Georgia
He retired from Georgia Department of Public Health.
Now living in Augusta, Georgia
He attended Clyo High School from 1947 until he graduated in 1951. He played baseball, basketball, and track. He was select to the all county basketball team I 1950.
He played baseball with the Clyo Town Team from 1947-1958. He played catcher, first base and outfield. He hit 3 homerun in one game at Mo-Ed Stadium in 1957.
He attended Georgia Teachers College from 1955 until 1958. He was a 4 year letterman in baseball. He led the team in hitting in 1957. In 1957 they were selected to play in the NCAA Regional Tournament for a chance to go to the College World Series. The 1957 team was the first from Georgia Teachers College ever invited to the College World Series.
He helped with Little League teams from Richmond County Recreation Department from 1960 until 1975.
