George Patten Rahn

2004 Effingham County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

 

George graduated from Effingham Academy in 1949. He played baseball, basketball, ran track, relay and the 440. His team was the 1949 Class C State Baseball champions.

             He graduated from Georgia Teachers College in 1958 after eight years in the Coast Guard. While attending G.T.C., he was on the baseball team; four-year T Club member, sports editor, and intramurals.

            He was employed by the Effingham County Board of Education. He served as head baseball coach, head tennis coach, assistant football coach, and basketball coach. His baseball team was first runner-up in the state baseball Class A championships. He was also Region Coach of the Year.

            He served as Principal of Clyo Elementary School, and Headmaster of Effingham Academy. He taught Drivers Education at Effingham County High School, and various other subjects. He was recently inducted into the ECHS Sports Hall of Fame.

            After retirement, he supported and assisted the Effingham 4-H Shooting Sports Team, a statewide 4-H competition. George was a member of the Forest City Gun Club. He was an avid sportsman – hunting, fishing, camping, and exploring. He owned a tree farm and was often called “the Christmas Tree Man.”

            He was a member of the Springfield United Methodist Church. He taught Sunday School, was Chairman of the Board of Ministries, and a member of the Board of Stewards.

            He was president of Springfield Jaycees and was selected as “Outstanding Local President” for the First District Jr. Chamber of Commerce.
