2003 Effingham County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

 

Birthday February 4, 1926

 

Attended Effingham Academy for four years, graduating in 1943.  While there, he participated in baseball, basketball, and track. He went to state competition in track (relay team).

 

Effingham County sports participation includes baseball (Springfield), basketball (Springfield Athletic Club), softball, coaching women’s ball teams, coaching little league boy’s baseball, and refereeing high school basketball games. He also played in the Savannah River League and was awarded the Sportsmanship trophy.

 

He played semi-pro baseball (Position of catcher) in the Ogeechee League. In 1947 he signed with Thomasville, Georgia Farm club of the Detroit Tigers (Spring Training only).

Wife Mary, and children Kellton  and wife Debbie, Karla and husband Gene, and Kim and wife Audrey and he has nine grandchildren.
