Marty Pevey

2005 Effingham County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

 

 

Was born on September 18, 1961

 

Mother is Margie Pevey and father is Alfred Pevey

 

Marty played little league and pony league baseball in Effingham County before moving to Savannah with his parents.  He is a graduate of Windsor Forest High School where he played 4 years of baseball for Earl Etheridge. He was name to the All State baseball team his senior year.

 

He attended Georgia Southern College on a baseball scholarship where he was the starting catcher for 3 years, where he was named to the All Conference team his junior year. He led GSC to three conference championships and appearances in three regional tournaments. He was selected as an All-American and has since been selected into the Georgia Southern Sports Hall of Fame as well as being named as the catcher on the “20-year GSU All Star Team.  He was drafted by Minnesota Twins in the 19th round of the June 1982 draft. 

 

Marty signed a professional baseball contract and played several seasons in the major leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays, St. Louis Cardinals and the Detroit Tigers.  Marty was then hired by the Blue Jays as a major league coach and then as a minor league manager.  This season he will be the manager of the Blue Jay’s AAA team in Syracuse, NY, which is the highest minor league team in their system, and thus is regarded as their best manager.  Marty has also served as the Director of the Blue Jays “Fall Instructional League team” in Arizona, where their top prospects are given extensive instruction in baseball skills in an effort to speed their advancement to the major leagues.

 

Some career highlights:

1983 – Finished 8th in the South Atlantic League with a .312 batting average

1984- Selected to Florida State League Mid Season and Post Season All Star Team – MVP of All Star Game..Finished 4th in the FSL with a .308 batting average

1985- Selected to play in Florida State League All Star Game .. Finished 6th in FSL with a .290 batting average

1988 -  Named MVP of American Association Championship Series (AAA ball), hitting .545 with one home run and 3 RBI

1989 – Made Major League debut for Expos, May 16 .. Collected first big league hit May 24, 1989 .. Named to Ga. Southern Baseball Wall of Fame and Sports Hall of Fame

1998 -  Managed Hagerstown to first half division championship and a berth in South Atlantic League Finals

2000 – Florida State League Manager of the Year..Led Dunedin to first half division championship and a berth in FSL Finals

2003 – Guided New Haven to Eastern League Finals… Named Eastern League/Chase Manager of the Year with a record 79-63 and a first place finish

2004 – Named to Greater Savannah Sports Hall of Fame…Manager Syracuse Sky Chiefs

2005 – Manager Syracuse Sky Chiefs
