2003 Effingham County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee

 

 

She attended Effingham Academy in Springfield from 1952-1956.  She played four years on the varsity basketball team. She was class president here senior year, was voted Miss Senior, was valedictorian and was awarded the girl’s Most Athletic award.  She attended Georgia Teachers College and participated in tennis and soccer. In 1950-51, she won first place in the 50-yard dash, and grammar school girls relay team for the county.  In 1951-52, she won first in the 50-yard dash, 75-yard dash, and girls relay.  In 1952-53, she won first place in the 50-yard dash, 75-yard dash, and girls relay.  She played many years of church softball. She helped coach several girls’ basketball teams and also was the head coach for several years.  In 1975, her team won the county championship.  She also coached several years of softball and helped coach several all-star teams.  She also did some volunteer umpiring and working in concessions.  She played basketball in the women league for Arden Chevrolet and Kight Ford.  She also played in the Savannah Women’s League for Haupt Gas Company.

She is married to Ellis and they have 4 children who were all very active in county sports and nine grandchildren, which are also very active in sports.  She is very active in Turkey Branch Baptist Church and enjoys watching her grandchildren in their sport activities.
