Ronnie Weaver
2003 Effingham County Sports Hall of Fame Inductee
He attended Effingham Academy in Springfield from 1946 to 1950.
He participated in basketball, baseball, and track. The baseball team won the state championship. He played both shortstop and outfield. After high school, he played baseball with Turkey Branch baseball team. He then joined the Navy and played fast pitch softball on the Navy team.
In 1955, he played baseball for the Springfield team. He then played for the Effingham County team in the Savannah River League. He played church softball from age 29 to 50. He also was coach of the church team for many years. He coached baseball and softball from 1966 to at least 1982. He also umpired baseball and softball tournaments for no fee. At one time he was coaching three different teams. Some of his accomplishments were: in 1971, his basketball won the county tournament, and he was then the little leagues all star coach. In 1963, he coached the senior girl’s softball team and won district and placed 2nd in state. In 1974, he was the midget girls all star coach. In 1966, his pee wee team was the county champion. In 1977 his boys basketball team won first place. In 1972, along with Jim Simmons, started baseball for eight years and under in Springfield.
