HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Best Wishes for 2008!
The past year has been very eventful in the Meldrim Community. One of the best things to happen in the community this year was the installation of our new playground. All of the hard work we've done over the past several years finally paid off... in a very big way. People now come from miles away to enjoy our wonderful park and what it has to offer. We've had a lot of good times this year too! We had a great time at our annual Easter Parade, a very talented group of contestants for the Womanless Beauty Pageant this year raised quite a bit of money for Relay for Life, and of course the annual Meldrim Halloween Carnival topped off the year.

Not everything was good this year. We also had our share of the bad. There were illnesses, fall injuries, and untimely passings. As we begin the new year, please take a moment to remember some of the people we've lost this past year. Please visit the memorial pages for each of them on the Meldrim website along with others that we've lost the last few years.

On a good note, the Meldrim Community Service Program I started in Granny's honor reached new heights in 2007. We were able to provide a total of 1603 hours of FREE Community Service this year! Is that great or what? I now receive community service workers from Effingham, Chatham, and Bryan County. The total is from combining hours from community service workers, volunteers, and my personal hours. Steve Rodgers has been a tremendous help throughout the year and has been named "Volunteer of the Year" . He volunteered over 150 hours this past year. Congratulations Steve!

Here are a few New Year's Quotes for you to enjoy!
New Year's Eve, where auld acquaintance be forgot. Unless, of course, those tests come back positive. ~Jay Leno
An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves. ~Bill Vaughan
May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions. ~Joey Adams
People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas. ~Author Unknown
Youth is when you're allowed to stay up late on New Year's Eve. Middle age is when you're forced to. ~Bill Vaughn
Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man. ~Benjamin Franklin

I hope each of you have a terrific year in 2008. We are already starting it off right, just by living in such a great community of friends and neighbors. Thank you for supporting the Meldrim Community!

Granny's Passing |
|
This is a very hard time for me right now and I appreciate all of the support the Meldrim Community has given. Granny was the best thing that has ever happened in my life and I was very lucky to have her. Granny was always there for me throughout my life and it was certainly my honor to be there for her when she needed me most. She has been the best friend, mother, and teacher that I could ever ask for and I will miss her dearly. I'd like to thank each of you for your condolences and support as I now face life without having her. Thank you,
Stephen |

Meldrim Community Service Program
DON'T FORGET! I am still running the Meldrim Community Service Program that I founded in Granny's honor. So far, I have been able to provide 1000 hours of FREE Community Service this year! If you know of any seniors or individuals with disabilities in the Meldrim Community in need of assistance, please let me know. I will add them the the list of those I'm helping. Also, if you would like to add your name to the list of volunteers, I will contact you each time we have a new project to see if you can help. The list of those in need is growing. Someone lower on the list may actually receive help faster if a volunteer/community service worker comes along that matches their needs. Other than that, it is a first come, first serve basis, except for emergencies.

Neal grew up in Meldrim alongside most of us. As a husband and a father, Neal wanted his wife and children to live here in Meldrim, near the rest of his family. He absolutely loved working as a firefighter and was always ready and willing to help anyone. We have just lost a very valuable friend, neighbor, and community member. Please keep Neal's family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time, as well as the days to come.
Thank you,
Stephen R. Newsome President Meldrim Civic Club
